TELVIN WALLACE

ABOUT

Telvin Wallace is an interdisciplinary artist whose work focuses on mental health and the human condition. He is a recent graduate of North Carolina Central University and is finishing up his MFA in Painting at the New York Academy of Art. Wallace states that his breakthrough came about when he began to execute work that is screaming to be made based on his own subconscious. The psychologically charged work brings viewers face to face with contentious culture while proclaiming the resilience of the human spirit.

Wallace states: “One of the things that saved me was how accessible the museums were in the RDU area, such as the NCCU Art Museum, the Nasher Museum, North Carolina Museum of Art, the Contemporary Art Museum, and the Ackland Museum. I would stand in front of the work examining them for hours, then I would go back and find out how to replicate these images and think about what they were doing that I wasn’t. I’ve been painting for a couple of years but I still have a lifetime to go.”

He has exhibited his work in a few group and solo exhibitions in the RDU area, including “I Feel Like That” at Block Gallery and “Care for Me” at the Durham Arts Council. He was the recipient of the Ella Fountain Pratt Emerging Artist Grant in 2019-20. He is also in the permanent collection of North Carolina Central University and the City of Raleigh, and a Painting teacher at the North Carolina Museum of Art.
